Opportunities for Undergraduate Research and Scholarship (OURS)
Program Description
The Opportunities for Undergraduate Research and Scholarship (OURS) initiative, managed by the Center for Development, Support, and Success in Engineering and Computing (CDSSEC) at Florida International University’s (FIU) College of Engineering and Computing (CEC), provides CEC students with structured pathways to gain meaningful research experience aligned with their academic interests and long-term career goals. Through this program, undergraduate students are paired with faculty mentors who guide them in hands-on research activities, allowing participants to develop technical competencies, build confidence, and explore emerging areas within engineering and computing.
OURS Scholars receive financial support in the form of a $1,000 monthly stipend during the fall and spring semesters while contributing 10–15 hours per week to research-related projects. This dedicated support model enables students to fully engage in the research process without the pressure of balancing additional work commitments.
In addition to the research experience itself, the program offers targeted professional development funding to help students advance academically and professionally. Scholars may receive support for presenting research at academic conferences, exploring post-graduation pathways, identifying summer research or internship opportunities, and developing skills essential for the job market or advanced academic careers.
By combining mentorship, hands-on research, and professional development, OURS helps students grow as emerging researchers and prepares them for future science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers, graduate studies, and other advanced opportunities across engineering and computing.
